The answer: Henry Ford (pictured), the American industrialist who pioneered the assembly line form of motor vehicle production, creating Detroit’s auto industry in the process. The quote above came from an interview Ford did that was published in the San Francisco Examiner on August 26, 1928. As for reincarnation, Ford claimed to have adopted this worldview at 26, saying that “the discovery of reincarnation put [his] mind at ease”…since it allowed him to take the “long view of life.” And although Ford remains a controversial figure in American history (he also made many anti-Semitic comments during his lifetime), what struck me the most about learning of his views on past lives is that he dared to express them publicly, from America’s heartland, at a time when the country was deeply conservative—and largely Christian. This gives another meaning entirely to the slogan, “Built Ford Tough.”
